Van mounts curb in Barcelona terror attack

Australians woke up this morning to terrible news about a terrorist attack in the beautiful, welcoming city of Barcelona.
It has caused the world to take notice at yet what is once again a tragic event and ultimately a global threat to the general safety of humanity.
The brazen attack saw a white van plough into a busy pedestrian sidewalk killing 13 people injuring at least 50 more.
The questions that arise after such a tragedy is how can we better protect areas where people gather such as tourist destinations, outdoor shopping malls and sporting or concert precincts.
In Melbourne areas such as Federation Square, Bourke Street Mall and Melbourne Cricket Ground have high foot traffic and could be potential terrorist targets.
Essentially, the most reliable method that can be employed is the creation of safe zones. These safe zones ensure cars cannot enter foot paths or pedestrian only areas.
These safe zones will protect the general public and also increase the confidence of the public to venture out and enjoy their time in big cities such as Melbourne.
Melbournians, tourists, and people all around the world deserve to feel safe when they are out and about shopping, visiting sights and going to sporting events or concerts.
